Local & Indigenous Cultures

Our library provides specialized databases dedicated to national languages and ethnic cultures. These collections feature resources on the languages, daily life, culture, and history of Taiwan's Hokkien, Hakka, and Indigenous communities. With a variety of content—including educational programs, interactive courses, animated cartoons, videos, photographs, and music—readers can easily learn their mother tongues and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse cultures and lifestyles of each ethnic group.

Taiwan Local Languages Audiovisual Database

This database features two series—Taiwanese (Hoklo) and Hakka—covering vocabulary, sentence patterns, dialogues, two-part allegorical sayings, riddles, and rhymes. It serves as a practical resource for learning and exploring Taiwan’s local languages, supporting both everyday use and cultural understanding.

Kiss Culture Taiwanese Children’s Songs Video Library

Featuring 75 Taiwanese children’s songs written by renowned local authors, this library presents language learning through simple, everyday expressions and lively, engaging animations. Accessible within the library’s IP range, it supports devices including computers, tablets, and smartphones. With music and videos, children can easily sing along while enjoying an interactive and fun learning experience.

Digital Archive of NLPI

The Digital Archive of NLPI features Hakka artifacts included in its local history collections. Digitized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Hsinchu County Government, these items are preserved for public appreciation, research, and cultural promotion. The collection includes historically significant objects such as weapons, agricultural tools, paintings, sculptures, and various everyday artifacts, reflecting the artistic and cultural heritage of the Hakka community.

E-Book Online Service

This platform focuses on Traditional Chinese e-books, offering a collection of over 50,000 titles and 490,000 volumes. Users can read online across multiple devices, including PCs, laptops, and iOS and Android mobile devices. The service is available 24/7, providing easy access to digital library resources anytime, anywhere.

  • Readers of this library and Taichung Public Library may log in directly using their library account (ID number) and password.
  • Holders of partner library cards under the Interlibrary Card Program may log in via their home library’s catalog system. After activating access to the National Library of Public Information, users can sign in with their library card credentials (account: ID number; default password: uppercase first letter of ID + date of birth in YYYYMMDD format) to borrow e-books.

Dream Picture Book Database 

This database features over 1,400 picture books, including student creations, works from public libraries, local cultural highlights, and award-winning titles. Each book offers options such as hidden text, audio narration, and annotated Mandarin pinyin. Selected titles also provide animated versions with voiceovers in Mandarin, English, Taiwanese Hokkien, and Hakka. The resources are ideal for parent–child reading or for teachers to supplement local language education.

Painting-Based Rapid Memory Learning Database

This database offers multilingual learning modules that help users prepare for language proficiency tests using a painting-based memory technique. Available modules include:Rapid Memory for Beginner Korean Proficiency Test,Rapid Memory for Beginner Vietnamese Proficiency Test,Rapid Memory for Intermediate English Proficiency Test,Advanced Taiwanese Language Course,Selected Courses in Taiwanese Sign Language.

Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Base

Explore the rich diversity of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples through authentic cultural perspectives. The database features tribal overviews, cultural appreciation, an introductory cultural encyclopedia, historical timelines, and in-depth insights into social and cultural development.

Online Taiwan History Dictionary

This resource traces the development of Taiwan’s political, economic, military, diplomatic, educational, and cultural spheres from prehistoric times to 2003. It includes more than 4,600 entries, 550 images, and 44 charts, and offers access to information on Indigenous peoples, historical documents, and related visual materials.

The Digital Archive of NLPI

After 1895, Japan initiated extensive surveys of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples. This database brings together investigations and publications by the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office, Japanese anthropologists, writers, and others. Its holdings include survey reports, administrative records on Indigenous governance, as well as materials on languages, mythology, and customs. It serves as an important resource for the study of Taiwan’s Indigenous history.

The collection includes licensed domestic and international animated programs such as Beibei's Daily Diary, Young Abe GO! GO! Sesame, Chibi Maruko-chan, DNAXCAT, and Katz Fun. Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines

This section introduces the cultures of Taiwan’s 16 officially recognized Indigenous groups, including the Amis, Atayal, Paiwan, Bunun, Puyuma, Rukai, Tsou, Saisiyat, Yami (Tao), Thao, Kavalan, Truku, Sakizaya, Seediq, Hla’alua, and Kanakanavu.

The collection is presented across categories such as traditional attire, textiles and accessories, daily utensils, ritual objects, and artistic works, showcasing selected highlights from the museum’s holdings.

Council of Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan – Official Website

This website features information on 16 Indigenous groups in Taiwan, including the Amis, Atayal, Paiwan, Bunun, Puyuma, Rukai, Tsou, Saisiyat, Yami, Thao, Kavalan, Truku, Sakizaya, Seediq, Hla’alua, and Kanakanavu.

It provides overviews of each group’s background, geographic distribution, cultural characteristics, religious beliefs, festivals and oral traditions, as well as traditional crafts, architecture, and video content.

Mother Tongue Nest (Indigenous Peoples Commission, Taipei City Government)

This platform offers a digital archive of praint teaching materials and an expanding collection of Indigenous language learning resources updated annually. Its multimedia section features instructional videos for 20 Indigenous songs, five Indigenous-language animations, themed storytelling lessons in Amis through the “Mother Tongue Nest Classroom,” storytelling by elders, teacher training highlights, traditional song tutorials, and the “Where to Speak Indigenous Languages” series, among other learning resources.

Ethnic Language E-Park (Foundation for Indigenous Languages Research and Development)

This platform provides learning materials for Taiwan’s Indigenous languages, featuring a wide range of print resources developed by the Council of Indigenous Peoples over the years. It also offers digital learning content and audiovisual resources, supporting diverse and accessible pathways for learning Indigenous languages.
